چکیده

The Sparse, Distributed Memory (SDM) model (Kanerva. 1984) is compared to Hopfield-type, neural-network models. A mathematical framework for cornporing the two models is developed, and the capacity of each model is investigated. The capacity of the SDM can be increased independent of the dimension of the stored vectors, whereas the Hopfield capacity is limited to a fraction of this dimension. The stored information is proportional to the number of connections, and it is shown that this proportionality constant is the same for the SDM. the Hopfield model, and higher-order models. The models are also compared in their obility to store and recall temporal sequences of patterns. The SDM also includes time delays so that contextual information con be used to recover sequences. A generalization of the SDM allows storage of correlated patterns.

Capacity for Patterns and Sequences in Kanerva's SDM as Compared to Other Associative Memory Models

The information capacity of Kanerva's Sparse, Distributed Memory (SDM) and Hopfield-type neural networks is investigated. Under the approximations used here, it is shown that tire total information stored in these systems is proportional to the number connections in the network. The proportionality constant is the same for the SDM and Hopfield-type models independent of the particular model, or...

Statistical Sparse Distributed Memory Prediction with Kanerva's

A new viewpoint of the processing: performed by Kanerva's sparse distributed memory (SDM) is presented. In conditions of nearor overcapacity, where the associative-memory behavior of the model breaks down, the processing performed by the model can be interpreted as that of a statistical predictor. Mathematical results are presented which serve as the framework for a new statistical viewpoint of...

Comparing Neural Networks: Hopfield Network and RBF Network

The two well-known neural network, Hopfield networks and Radial Basis Function networks, have different structures and characteristics. Hopfield neural network and RBF neural network are two of the most commonly-used types of feedback networks and feedforward networks respectively. This study gives an overview for Hopfield neural network and RBF neural network in architectures, the learning pro...

Kanerva's Sparse Distributed Memory with Multiple Hamming Thresholds

If the stored input patterns of Kanerva's Sparse Distributed Memory (SDM) are highly correlated, utilization of the storage capacity is very low compared to the case of uniformly distributed random input patterns. Here we consider a variation of SDM that has a better storage capacity utilization for correlated input patterns. This approach uses a separate selection threshold for each physical s...
